HISTORY

Over the past 200 years, Royal Bodewes has gained a strong and solid reputation. The Dutch are traditionally known as shipbuilders and traders of the Oceans of the World. Founded in 1812, Royal Bodewes has a long history in building sea-going vessels starting with traditional shallow draught sailing barges, in Dutch known as "tjalks." Around 1900, various types of vessels were built such as: steam-tugs and sailing cargo vessels. Around 1920 the first motorized cargo vessels were introduced offering 'at that time' a modern approach for both ocean going and inland water vessels, with an optimized cargo hold and meeting the wishes of the shipowners. At the end of the 1990's, Bodewes Shipyards started its first cooperation, by building hulls, with a Romanian Shipyard. The  hulls were then towed to the Netherlands and outfitted to the high-quality vessels, which Royal Bodewes is known for in the market. Expansion has lead to a further cooperation with shipyards in the Ukraine and Poland. Experience, motivated employees, expertise and inventiveness are the qualities, which have made Royal Bodewes a successful yard that has supplied hundreds of vessels for various purposes. In our photo reference list you can get a good impression of all the vessels that have been delivered by Royal Bodewes since 1812. Click here to learn more about the history of Royal Bodewes.

INNOVATION

Innovative designers and engineers enable the client to have their specific demands realized. With reliable and well-organized building methods the vessel delivery times are guaranteed. When looking back over the last 10 to 15 years, a lot of changes have taken place, which have influenced the current course of Royal Bodewes. New demands in the market requested by clients and continuing changes in legislation, have created a new philosophy within Royal Bodewes. This has strengthened our position in the market of today and tomorrow. Royal Bodewes is specialized in building of all kinds of cargo vessels in a range of 1,500 up to 15,000 DWT. Special types such as oil tankers, paper carriers, LNG carriers, cement carriers and tugboats are also part of our competence. With our own design team we are capable of developing not only the vessel types mentioned above, but any vessel required. Royal Bodewes can also cooperate with ship owners who bring their own designs. Click here to read more about Royal Bodewes' innovation initiatives.

BODEWES HONOURED WITH 'ROYAL'!

Friday 30 November 2012, her majesty's provincial governor Mr Max van den Berg officially granted the honourable predicate 'Royal' to Bodewes Group B.V. This certificate was handed over to the managing director Herman Bodewes and director Johan Schouwenaar. For the occasion the complete staff was called together at Bodewes' main building location at Hoogezand. Proudly looking back at its past and looking forward to a prosperous future, from now on THE BODEWES COMPANY WILL CONTINUE AS  'ROYAL BODEWES'. The ceremony took place in a very suitable scenery: right in front of the brand new mv UAL Houston, which happens to be the most sophisticated and also the longest vessel ever built by Bodewes at their Hoogezand premises. Symbolic for the increasing products of the company was the broadening and deepening of the canal alongside the slipways necessary before departure of the mv UAL Houston. Watch the ceremony video.
