Sint Jansland

NB 469 (IMO no. 5329293) was launched and delivered to its owner Scheepvaart- & Steenkolen Maatschappij N.V. Rotterdam, the Netherlands in 1962. The General Cargo Ship was baptized MV Sint Jansland. Her overall length was 69.77 meters, breadth was 10,24 meters and deadweight was 775 tons. In 1969 the name of the vessel was changed to Griqualand by her new owner Suid-Afrikaanse Skeepvaart Lyne (EDMS) . A dangerous situation arose when the vessel, loaded with ammunition, caught fire in November 1970. The coaster drifted towards the city of Durban. A British navy frigate prevented a disaster by driving the coaster into the ground before the ammunition exploded.
